I’m Patrick Carland. I am currently a graduate student and Teaching Assistant in Japanese at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I graduated from Emmanuel College with a degree in English in 2014 and worked as an Assistant Language Teacher in the JET Programme in Aomori, Japan from 2015 to 2017. My research interests include postwar literature, discursive constructions of homosexuality in a cross-cultural context, queer identities and history, poetics of the body, the Japanese avant-garde, doujinshi circles and fan studies, and anime and manga. I also enjoy video games and love animals, from which I derive the name of this blog.
